Mike Lawler’s Healthcare Agenda: Higher Costs, Less Coverage

WESTCHESTER, NEW YORK — On the 5th anniversary of the COVID-19 Stimulus Package, Hudson Valley families are now facing the consequences of Congressman Mike Lawler’s vote for the Republican Tax Law. By failing to extend stimulus support for middle-class tax credits and cutting critical Affordable Care Act funding, the Republican Tax Law has put health insurance at risk for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. The tax law may destabilize health plans that provide low-cost coverage to roughly 1.6 million people statewide

“Families like mine are scrambling to figure out how they’re going to pay the bills,” said Karen, a former tax credit recipient from Peekskill. “My wife and I are looking at paying nearly $10,000 more this year because of the lost tax credits. Rep. Lawler doesn’t seem to grasp the urgency of the moment. We don’t need a bundle of empty promises and ridiculous plans that won’t work.”

Additionally, as many as 860,000 moderate-income New Yorkers—including thousands of the 211,500 Medicaid recipients in New York’s 17th District—could watch their coverage disappear entirely due to the Republican Tax Law and Lawler’s vote. Five years after Washington lowered health care costs, Rep. Lawler voted for a bill that raises them. District 17 deserves better.

“Medicaid cuts — these are medical insurance cuts to the poorest people, the most underprivileged people in the country. That is unconscionable,” said Robert, a retired merchant marine living in Tappan. “Tax cuts for billionaires, that is unconscionable.”
