Lawler & Disorder: Rep Attacks Constituents to Distract From Record Cuts to Essential Health Care Programs

WESTCHESTER, NEW YORK — In response to a Politico report highlighting Rep. Lawler’s vote to raise health care costs—and Empire State Voices' ad campaign featuring his own constituents—Lawler’s team chose to attack the very people he represents instead of fighting for his district. These statements even went as far as calling residents featured in the ad “activists disguised as ordinary constituents.”

“A spokesperson for Rep. Lawler said, ‘not one person they’ve put on camera has been negatively impacted by anything Congressman Lawler has done,’ Well, guess what, I am one person who has been impacted by Congressman Lawler's actions. It is a betrayal of Hudson Valley constituents to fund handouts for the ultra-wealthy by stripping health care from the people who need it most,” said Karen, a constituent, cancer survivor, and storyteller featured in the ad campaign.  “Shame on Mike Lawler for attacking constituents like me instead of fighting to fix our health care system, which he cut by voting for the Republican Tax Law.”

“Rep. Lawler continues to run from his record, but his lies can’t distort the truth: Lawler puts billionaire interests above those of his district. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time he’s chosen to attack and distract,” said Roberta NY-17 retiree featured in a February Empire State Voices ad holding Rep. Lawler accountable. “Mike Lawler voted to cut Medicare to give tax cuts to the rich.”

“It’s sad that Rep. Lawler is attacking his own constituents all to deflect from the fact that he voted to destroy Medicaid despite vowing to protect it. NY 17 residents can’t afford Lawler’s broken policies. Rep. Lawler now more than ever needs to start lowering costs, not raising them,” said Courtney Fields, Executive Director, Empire State Voices.
