Congressman Mike Lawler Has One Last Chance to Oppose Trump’s Devastating Medicaid Cuts
The Senate is Sending Trump’s Tax Breaks for Billionaires and Medicaid Cuts Back to the House of Representatives for a Final Vote
NEW YORK — TToday, Vice President J.D. Vance broke a 50-50 tie in the Senate, narrowly passing the Senate’s version of the Republican Tax Scam and sending it back to the House of Representatives for final passage. The Senate bill contains even harsher cuts than the version passed by the House back in May. If signed into law, the legislation would devastate vital programs such as Medicaid and SNAP, while spending trillions of dollars on tax breaks primarily benefiting large corporations and the ultra-wealthy.
Nearly 7 million New Yorkers rely on Medicaid for healthcare, and nearly 3 million depend on SNAP to put food on the table. This bill would gut those lifelines, threatening the healthcare and food security of millions of New Yorkers. The message from Republicans could not be clearer: in today’s economy, ordinary working families are on their own.
“Congressman Lawler spent the last month sending letters begging the Senate to improve the bill. Not only did the Senate ignore his pleas, but they made it even worse,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “This legislation is cruel, plain and simple. It punishes working New York families so the ultra-rich can get even richer. Congressman Lawler may think no one will notice if he ducks behind party lines, but the people of New York are watching. Even a small stand can make a big difference, and Rep. Lawler has one last chance to stand with New Yorkers and vote against these devastating cuts.”
