New York Families Feel the Heat of Rising Prices!

Empire State Voices Donates School Supplies to Local Families

WEST HAVERSTRAW, NEW YORK — Yesterday, in an effort to ease the growing burden on local families amid rising costs and economic uncertainty, Empire State Voices partnered with West Haverstraw Elementary School to distribute $1,500 worth of school supplies to students and families in need.

In recent months, higher tariffs have driven up the cost of everyday goods, leaving both American businesses and families reeling. For New York’s teachers and parents, the impact has been especially severe, as budgets already stretched thin buckle under the pressure of inflated prices on essentials like notebooks, pens and pencils, clothing, and classroom technology.

“Each day, our students come to class ready to learn and conquer the tasks ahead,” said Angelica Terry, Principal of West Haverstraw Elementary School. “But with the cost of living in New York skyrocketing, families here in the Hudson Valley need all the relief we can get. This donation goes a long way toward helping our students and their families focus on what matters most—their education.”

“Over the past few months, higher tariffs have led to higher costs, and what used to be an exciting trip to the store ahead of a new school year has now become a source of anxiety for countless New York families,” said Dylan Wheeler, NY-17 Regional Organizing Director for Empire State Voices. “For many, it’s no longer just a question of buying what their children need—it's choosing between groceries and a backpack. With our donation today, we hope we can ease that burden for at least some of our neighbors here in the Hudson Valley.”
