Rep. Mike Lawler Voted for Sprawling Cuts to Medicaid—Now He’s Begging the Senate to Clean Up His Mess
16 House Republicans Have Signed onto a Letter Opposing Proposed Senate Cuts, Despite Having Just Voted for Their Own!
NEW YORK — This week, Representative Mike Lawler joined 15 of his House Republican colleagues in a letter to Congressional leadership, begging the Senate to oppose harmful cuts to Medicaid. Just last month, Rep. Lawler voted in favor of the House version of the budget bill, which included nearly $700 billion in cuts to the program.
This is the second letter this month from so-called House ‘moderates’ begging the Senate to clean up their mess. Less than three weeks ago, a similar group of lawmakers sent a letter urging the Senate to remove elements of the bill they had just passed that would severely cut clean energy tax credits, jeopardizing billions of dollars of investment and thousands of jobs.
“For the second time this month, Congressman Lawler is scrambling to get someone else to clean up the mess he made,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “That he has the audacity to ask the Senate to protect Medicaid after having just voted to slash its funding by nearly $700 billion shows just how little he thinks of his own constituents. But we’re not falling for it. He can send as many letters as he likes—it won’t change the fact that New Yorkers now know where he stands. When the chips are down, when it’s time to fight, Rep. Lawler will side with billionaires over working New Yorkers every single time.”
