House Republicans Beg the Senate to Fix Their Mistake
New York Reps. Mike Lawler, Nick LaLota, and Andrew Garbarino All Supported the Republican Budget Bill Last Month, Including Cuts to Key Energy Tax Credits
NEW YORK — Following the passage of House Republicans’ disastrous budget legislation last month, three New York representatives have now joined a group of their colleagues in begging the Senate to clean up some of the mess they made. In a letter signed by 13 House Republicans, the lawmakers urge their Senate counterparts to remove provisions from the bill that would severely cut clean energy tax credits—a move that would jeopardize billions of dollars in investment and thousands of jobs.
Representatives Mike Lawler and Nick LaLota both voted to cut the tax credits, despite now claiming to oppose the measure. Representative Garbarino slept through the vote, but stated that he would have voted for the bill.
“In the weeks since House Republicans rammed through their reckless budget bill, we’ve seen member after member scramble to disavow provisions they either didn’t read or didn’t understand,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “This letter is yet another sign of just how irresponsibly New York House Republicans treated their duty to their constituents. Instead of doing their jobs and scrutinizing the bill, they caved to pressure from President Trump and blindly followed orders. Now, they’re hoping the Senate will bail them out.”
