As House Republicans Move to Cut Medicaid, Rep. Lawler Remains Silent

“Now’s the time to put up or shut up.” -Audrey, Montebello, NY

NEW YORK — Yesterday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee completed its markup of the Republican budget bill, which seeks to cut over $600 billion from Medicaid. If passed into law, this legislation would strip healthcare coverage from 10.3 million Americans, endangering the health and well-being of children, seniors, and families across New York.

Congressman Mike Lawler, who has promised not to support any bill that threatens to cut Medicaid coverage for the most vulnerable, has so far failed to speak out against the bill.

“Congressman Lawler has spent the last few months telling every cable news camera he could find that he would never vote to cut or undermine the Medicaid program. Well, now’s the time to put up or shut up,” said Audrey, a healthcare worker from Montebello, NY. “I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be to access Medicaid benefits under the current system. Now, Republicans in the House want to add even more red tape and procedural hurdles, making it that much harder for New York families to access the lifesaving care they so desperately need. This isn’t a plan to ‘strengthen’ Medicaid, this is a plan to kill it.”
