One Year Ago: Mike Lawler Voted to Spike Health Care Costs for New Yorkers

And today, he still won’t own up to it

WESTCHESTER, NY — One year ago this week, Rep. Mike Lawler voted to make the largest Medicaid cuts in history and increase health care costs across the board, all while giving tax cuts to billionaires as part of the Republican Tax Law.

One year later, families across the Hudson Valley are feeling the effect. 

“For over 40 years, I have lived, worked and raised my family in Rockland County, and now that I’m retired, I worry every day that my Congressman might take away my care like he did for so many other New Yorkers,” said Robert from Stony Point. “I paid into this system my whole working life, and I should be able to retire without the fear that Mike Lawler is going to take my health care or raise my prescription costs. We need our representative to care more about our health care than tax breaks for billionaires.” 

"As a young breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand that cancer doesn't end when treatment ends. Survivors rely on ongoing scans, medications, specialist appointments, and preventive care for years,” said Justine from Bedford. “This bill is already hurting New Yorkers, and creating more uncertainty for people who depend on affordable, reliable health care. I'm disappointed that Rep. Lawler continues to support it instead of fighting to make it easier for patients and families to get the care they need."

Congressman Lawler campaigned on promises not to cut funding for Medicaid or Medicare. However, as a result of his health care cuts, Protect Our Care estimates that since June 2025 more than 400,000 New Yorkers have lost access to health care, and tens of thousands of additional families saw health care costs rise. 

Now, Lawler continues to lie about his efforts to “protect” Medicaid, insists that, including Good Samaritan Hospital and Montefiore Nyack Hospital, the 2 hospitals in his district are not at risk of closure, and won’t even listen to his constituents' concerns.
