Hudson Valley Soccer Fans “Kick-Off” Conversation About Rising Summer Costs During World Cup Watch Party

PEEKSKILL, NY — Tonight, Empire State Voices hosted a World Cup watch party in Peekskill, in partnership with Make the Road New York, to highlight just how expensive summer fun has gotten.

The event highlighted how tariffs, the Iran war, and the Republican Tax Law are leading Hudson Valley families to pay more for groceries, gas, healthcare, and other everyday necessities, policies that Rep. Lawler voted for.

“I have worked hard my whole life, but if costs don’t go down soon, I'll be forced to make difficult decisions between affording my medication and my groceries,” said Nancy from Peekskill. “I am proud to be out in Peekskill tonight with members of my community who know we are getting the short end of the stick, and are ready to do something about it.”

“It’s getting to be impossible for families to go to the supermarket, fill up their gas tanks, and get their prescriptions, let alone do something fun like watch a soccer game,” said Tina from Peekskill. “Right now, working families are paying the price for decisions happening in Washington, and instead of solutions, all we’re getting is excuses.”

Costs are up across the board, and it’s hurting summer fun.

  • For hosting backyard barbecues: Grocery store bills rose 0.7% in April, marking the biggest one-month jump in grocery prices in years.

  • For planning vacations: A gallon of gas is almost $1 more than it was this time last year and a domestic plane ticket now costs 31% more than it did in January.

  • For running the AC: The average New Yorker will spend $777 cooling their homes this summer.

  • For pretty much everything else: Tariffs are currently projected to cost New Yorkers $2,512 in 2026, up 44% from last year.
