Lawler Lies About Medicaid Cuts, Interrupts Constituent Concerned About Her Aging Mother’s Care

After proudly voting for the largest Medicaid cut in history, Lawler is still not owning up to his actions

DUTCHESS COUNTY, NEW YORK — Nearly a year after voting for the largest Medicaid cut in American history, Rep. Mike Lawler is still avoiding addressing Hudson Valley families’ concerns about his votes to cut Medicaid.

At a May 17th town hall, Rep. Lawler cut off one of his own constituents who was concerned about how she plans to take care of her 103-year-old mother now that Lawler and House Republicans voted to slash up to $128 billion from New York’s Medicaid program.

“We’re trying to plan for my 103-year-old mother’s care, and Mike Lawler lied straight to my face about the cuts he voted for,” said Tina, a resident of Peekskill. “Constituents like my mother need a representative who’s fighting for them, not billionaire interests. Medicaid saved my mother’s life. Families like mine are scared about these health care cuts. Rep. Lawler needs to fund, not slash, Medicaid.”

“Instead of taking responsibility, Lawler is choosing denial, spin, and political cover while families across NY-17 are left wondering how they will afford care for their parents, children, and loved ones,” said Tina. “My family's electric bills are surging; it’s outrageous. Gas is up $1.50/gallon compared to last summer; now is not the time for $128 billion worth of Medicaid cuts.”

Rep. Lawler voted for devastating healthcare cuts that could leave 28,000 people in NY-17 without coverage and force painful cuts across New York’s healthcare system that could see up to 860,000 New Yorkers lose care entirely.
