As the Affordable Care Act Turns 16, Rep. Lawler’s Record Speaks for Itself
Constituents “disappointed” in Lawler’s continued attacks on healthcare
WESTCHESTER, NEW YORK — As this week marks the 16th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, Empire State Voices and Hudson Valley residents are calling out Rep. Lawler’s repeated efforts to weaken the law that keeps thousands of Hudson Valley families safe, healthy, and insured, and ask that he fight instead to lower health care costs.
Rep. Lawler proudly voted for the Republican Tax Law, which delivered massive tax breaks to big corporations and the wealthy while failing to extend key Affordable Care Act subsidies. As many as 860,000 moderate-income New Yorkers—including thousands of the 211,500 Medicaid recipients in New York’s 17th District—could watch their coverage disappear entirely due to the Republican Tax Law and Lawler’s vote.
“I currently use the Affordable Care Act exchange, and this year, my family’s premiums will increase by $3,000,” said Lynn, a resident of Yorktown Heights. “My husband has diabetes, so we can’t afford not to have insurance, but it’s getting to the point where it costs as much as my mortgage and property taxes. Rep. Lawler needs to find a serious solution to this problem, rather than just kicking the can down the road. I’m deeply disappointed he’s continuing to protect billionaire interests over Hudson Valley families.”
Since he voted for the Republican Tax Law last summer, little has changed in Lawler’s priorities. Last week, Rep. Lawler voted for legislation aimed at restricting deficit spending—and would have forced Congress to choose between funding priorities. In practice, this creates a false choice that puts programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid on the chopping block, while preserving tax breaks for the wealthy. Different bill, same old Lawler. The Hudson Valley can’t afford Mike Lawler.
