As New Yorkers Face Rising Health Care Costs, Congressman Mike Lawler is All Talk, No Action

NEW YORK — As Hudson Valley families brace for the impact of skyrocketing health insurance premiums next year, once again, Congressman Mike Lawler is all talk and no action when it comes to lowering costs for his constituents. While Rep. Lawler claims that he wants to address the problem of skyrocketing health care costs, when a real, long-term solution like the ACA discharge petition is put before him, he has nothing but lame excuses.

Hudson Valley families need Rep. Lawler to step up and support real solutions, not just talk his way into more media appearances that lead to zero real-world results for his constituents. You don’t get credit for simply saying that you want to lower health care costs; you need to actually support the plans that would do something about it.

“Opposing programs that help working families on the claim that someone ‘unworthy’ might also be receiving benefits is one of the oldest and most tired tricks in the book,” said Tracey Obenauer, a cancer survivor from Pearl River. “After I finished my cancer treatment, I was a single mother of two, kicked off my health insurance because of my disability, and the ACA tax credits were the only thing standing between my family and losing our healthcare entirely. Now that I’m back on my feet, I no longer qualify for those benefits. Congressman Lawler’s absurd hypothetical fears are just that: an excuse for him to sit back and do nothing to help the working people of his district. If he really believes in the need to tackle this health care affordability crisis, he needs to sign the discharge petition and actually fight to lower our costs.”
