ICYMI: Rep. Mike Lawler’s Constituents Demand Immediate Action on Health Care Tax Credits

Congressman Lawler Has Refused to Support a Long-Term Extension of Key Tax Credits That Thousands of Families in the Hudson Valley Rely On

HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK — Over the past several days, New Yorkers took to the streets to demand that Congressman Mike Lawler end his grandstanding and sign on to the discharge petition extending the expiring ACA tax credits. From a protest at the ‘Four Corners’ in Nanuet on Friday to a mobile billboard that drove through Rockland and Westchester Counties on Saturday, concerns over skyrocketing health insurance premiums have begun to take hold across the Hudson Valley.

Rockland County Business Journal: Rockland County Health Care Protest

  • “We want to make sure that this isn’t something that people forget about. We want this to be fresh in people’s minds so that Rep. Lawler and House Republicans can bring a vote forward to extend the ACA [tax credits] for a long-term period. A family of four in the Hudson Valley will see about a $1,100 increase per month in their health care premium. For a lot of people, they will just choose to not have insurance altogether.” -Dylan Wheeler, Empire State Voices

  • “The health care shutdown is over, for better or worse, and now we’ve got four weeks to make sure that the Affordable Care Act premium subsidies are renewed going forward. We have to do this by December 15th because that’s the deadline for Open Enrollment. There are 24 million Americans that are facing large premium spikes if these subsidies are not renewed.” -Mark Hannay, Metro New York Health Care For All

The government shut down because Republicans like Rep. Mike Lawler were unwilling to support an extension of the expiring health care tax credits, which run out at the end of the year. These credits help 140,000 New Yorkers afford their health insurance premiums. If allowed to expire, New York families could see their annual costs skyrocket by thousands, or even tens of thousands of dollars.
