As the Government Shutdown Enters Its 4th Week, New York Families Face Devastating Premium Hikes on the Horizon

As Essential Services Stall and Healthcare Faces Collapse, Rep. Lawler Sides with the Ultra-Wealthy, Abandoning His Duty to Protect New Yorkers

NEW YORK — Today, as the government shutdown enters its 4th week, working New Yorkers are facing the threat of massive premium hikes that could leave 7,000 New Yorkers and their families in the Hudson Valley unable to afford their health insurance.

If Congressman Mike Lawler does not act, New Yorkers across the Hudson Valley will soon receive word that their insurance premiums are increasing by an average of 33%, raising their healthcare costs by thousands of dollars annually. It’s time for Rep. Lawler to stop the partisan bickering, reverse the Republican Medicaid cuts, permanently extend the ACA tax credits, end this pointless government shutdown, and get back to work.

“New Yorkers are already drowning under a soaring cost-of-living crisis, and now Rep. Lawler is actively working to make healthcare even more out of reach for the very people he swore to represent,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “Over the past few weeks, Congressman Lawler has done nothing to address the problem at hand, focusing instead on partisan squabbles and attempting to score political points on cable news. He has lied about the impact of the Affordable Care Act and has desperately tried to shift the blame onto anyone but himself, despite being the one standing in the way of progress. Rep. Lawler’s refusal to act is an insult to New Yorkers across the Hudson Valley who are bearing the weight of this broken system that he seems so intent on defending.”
