As New Yorkers Demand Action from Republicans in Congress, Rep. Mike Lawler is Lashing Out at Anyone He Can Find
New Polling Shows That a Plurality of Americans Blame Republicans for the Ongoing Government Shutdown
NEW YORK — As the ongoing government shutdown continues into its third week, tensions are growing from around the country to the halls of Congress. A slate of recent polling from Navigator Research, Morning Consult, and the Washington Post shows that a plurality of Americans blame Republicans for the bureaucratic crisis due to their unified control of Washington. Despite this, New York Congressman Mike Lawler has been desperately trying to shift the blame onto anyone but himself, prowling the halls of Congress and engaging in heated spats with his colleagues.
Republicans in Congress shut down the government because they were unwilling to roll back devastating cuts to healthcare and food assistance funding that are set to force 860,000 New Yorkers off their health insurance and threaten the food security of over 1 million New Yorkers, including 363,000 children. Additionally, they refused to make permanent critical healthcare tax credits that more than 140,000 New Yorkers rely on to afford their premiums.
Because of the shutdown, over 430,000 New York mothers and their children are at risk of losing access to WIC nutrition assistance as the program runs out of money, and nearly 18,000 active duty New York servicemembers are in danger of missing paychecks.
“It’s frankly embarrassing that while the government is shut down and thousands of New Yorkers are worried about their paychecks and benefits, our Congressman is trolling around D.C. and trying to throw the blame onto anyone but himself,” said Lynn Caroll, a resident of Yorktown. “The government shut down because representatives like Mike Lawler were unwilling to roll back healthcare cuts that they had voted for earlier this year. Now, Congressman Lawler is more concerned with cable news appearances and scoring political points than he is with actually fixing the situation. Congressman Lawler, stop the theatrics and get to work repealing these harmful healthcare cuts that you voted for.”
