Rep. Lawler and Republicans in Congress Shut Down the Government Instead of Lowering New Yorkers’ Healthcare Costs
From Making Cuts to Medicaid to Health Care Tax Credits, it Seems There’s Nothing Rep. Lawler Enjoys More Than Raising Costs on New York Families
NEW YORK — The Republican-led Congress has failed to pass a government funding resolution because Representatives like New York’s Mike Lawler were unwilling to support any plan that reversed cuts to Medicaid or stopped premium costs from skyrocketing.
“Rep. Lawler appears in ads and says he has lowered costs for seniors, but he votes completely the opposite way,” said Diane Volz, 102, a former Medicaid recipient from Peekskill. “He’s taking away my Medicaid, which allows me to live independently with help, and is completely taking away health insurance for other seniors who live in my complex. Rep. Lawler threw us all under the bus, and I want him to stand up for us and fund Medicaid and healthcare.”
“Despite his repeated promises to lower costs for New York families, Rep. Lawler chose to do the exact opposite,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “Rather than support efforts to roll back Medicaid cuts and lower New Yorkers’ health insurance premiums, Rep. Lawler instead cowered behind partisan lines and threw tens of thousands of his constituents under the bus. Whether this shutdown lasts a day, a week, or a month, the impacts of these cost increases will haunt working New Yorkers for years to come.”
