ICYMI: Congressman Lawler Admits He Supports Raising Healthcare Costs on Constituents

Rep. Lawler’s Support for Ending Tax Credits Would Raise Healthcare Costs by as Much as 324% for Many New York Families

NEW YORK — Yesterday, on Fox Business, Rep. Mike Lawler blatantly stated that he wants to “phase out” key healthcare tax credits, raising costs for 7,000 of his constituents, many of whom would be left uninsured.

Over the past few days, Representative Mike Lawler has been on a media tear, jumping in front of any camera he can find to defend the ongoing Republican effort to raise healthcare costs and give massive tax breaks to billionaires. While we are just days away from a government shutdown, it seems there’s nothing Rep. Lawler would rather do than fight to kick his fellow New Yorkers off their health insurance.

“Congressman Lawler is trying his best to point fingers and call others ‘hypocrites,’ but it’s only to distract from the fact that he’s fighting to cut Medicaid, endanger rural hospitals, and raise the cost of health insurance premiums for millions of New Yorkers,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “His attempts would be laughable if the stakes weren’t so dire. He’s crying out about ‘political gamesmanship,’ but he’s the one playing politics with people’s lives. He needs to hop off his little soapbox and start actually fighting for the health and safety of the people of his district, not just recite his little partisan talking points.”

Then this morning, after posting an op-ed in the New York Post, he appeared on CNN, steamrolling and ignoring questions while attempting to pin the blame on anyone other than himself. Not once did he talk about his fellow New Yorkers, whom he swore an oath to represent.
