Rising Prices Loom as Trump’s ‘Tariff Tax’ Begins to Hit New York Families
NEW YORK — Working families across New York are beginning to feel the first real pinch from President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff policy, as consumer prices on everyday goods quietly start to climb. While inflation has only just begun to accelerate, economists warn the worst may be yet to come.
Trump’s disastrous trade policy, which imposes steep tariffs on imported goods from key trading partners, is driving up costs across supply chains, and those increases are beginning to land on store shelves. From toys and tools to furniture and clothing, prices are rising, and experts say this slow-moving economic crisis could accelerate in the months ahead.
“Families shouldn’t have to choose between school supplies and groceries because of Donald Trump’s mess of a trade policy,” said Maria Martinez, Executive Director of Empire State Voices. “These price hikes may be gradual, but the impact is real, and it’s hitting those who can least afford it. By rubber-stamping this tariff regime with his votes earlier this year, Congressman Lawler owns this inflation and the cost hikes that are now serving as a tax on working New Yorkers.”
