Empire State Voices Highlights Healthcare Cuts and Rising Costs at the Center of NY-17 Congressional Race

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Today, Hudson Valley residents picked new representation for their district, making it clear that funding for healthcare programs, affordable grocery costs, lower energy bills and gas prices are more important than tax breaks for billionaires.

“Time and again, Congressman Mike Lawler showed his constituents that pleasing Donald Trump and giving tax breaks to billionaires was more important than making life in the Hudson Valley affordable, and today it cost him,” said Courtney Fields, Empire State Voices Executive Director. “At a time when Hudson Valley families needed leadership, Congressman Lawler instead voted to cut our health care access and ignore the affordability crisis, and that’s unacceptable.”

For years, Empire State Voices (ESV) has worked to hold Congressman Lawler accountable after he supported legislation that cut healthcare and raised costs for New York families while he delivered massive tax breaks for billionaires. Over the past year, ESV:

“Mike Lawler voted to raise premiums, and as a result, my 103-year-old mother was left with a higher monthly bill. When I asked him about it, he told me I had nothing to worry about, but it turns out, he should have been more worried that we would hold him accountable for the irreparable damage he has done to our community,” said Tina from Peekskill. “Today, my mother, who lived to see the advent of programs like Social Security and Medicaid, alongside other Hudson Valley residents who have been let down by Mike Lawler, made our voices heard, and even though the harm to our community cannot be undone, we are ready to have a representative who will finally put us ahead of billionaires.”
