House Republicans’ Health Care Bill Would RAISE Costs for New Yorkers
Congressman Lawler’s Constituents Call On Him to Vote NO on Higher Health Care Premiums, Demand a Vote on Extending Tax Credits
HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK — House Republicans are about to vote on a health care bill that raises costs for New York families while doing nothing to extend the expiring Affordable Care Act credits. With premiums set to spike on January 1st for thousands of Hudson Valley families, Congressman Mike Lawler has finally caved under mounting pressure from his constituents and signed on to the discharge petition for a three-year extension of expiring health care tax credits. But the discharge petition is just the first step. Congressman Lawler needs to vote NO on the Republican health care bill and demand an immediate vote on the three-year extension.
Rep. Lawler’s constituents have spent weeks demanding that he support a 3-year extension of the expiring tax credits, holding press conferences, protests, and community forums, sharing their personal health care stories, and signing petitions of their own.
“New Yorkers have been speaking out and making their voices heard. We’ve been sharing our stories and making sure that our representative knows just how important these tax credits are for families struggling to afford the care they need,” said Karen, a cancer survivor and tax credit recipient from Yorktown. “After weeks of making excuses, Congressman Lawler finally listened to his constituents, but signing the discharge petition is only the first step. If his concern for struggling New Yorkers is more than just political theater, he needs to oppose the Republican health care bill and demand an immediate vote on the three-year extension of these lifesaving tax credits. The health and well-being of thousands of his constituents hangs in the balance, and we’re watching closely to see if he’s really ready to stand up for the people of his district, or if this is just more of the bluster and empty promises we’ve come to expect from him.”
