5 DAYS: Congressman Mike Lawler is Running Out of Time to Sign the Health Care Discharge Petition and Lower Premium Costs for His Constituents
If Health Care Tax Credits Are Not Extended Ahead of the December 15 Open Enrollment Deadline, Hudson Valley Families Could See Their Insurance Premiums Double!
HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK — With a key Open Enrollment deadline drawing near, Congressman Mike Lawler is running out of time to sign the health care discharge petition and bring the three-year health care tax credit extension up for a vote to lower premium costs for thousands of his constituents in the Hudson Valley. December 15th marks the last day for New Yorkers to enroll in a plan for coverage beginning on January 1st. If the expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits are not extended by then, working families could see their monthly premiums skyrocket, with some households forced to pay more than double what they paid this year for the same plan.
Republican Rep. Glen Grothman just stated in an interview that the three-year extension would pass the House if it came up for a vote—Rep. Lawler has the power to make that happen.
“Even before you account for the lost tax credits, my health insurance premiums are going to increase by more than $200 a month next year for worse coverage than I have now,” said Karen, a cancer survivor and health care tax credit recipient from Yorktown. “If Congressman Lawler refuses to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits, that could leave my husband and me paying nearly $10,000 more next year. I don’t know anyone who could just absorb that kind of increase—we certainly can’t. Rep. Lawler needs to sign on to the discharge petition and help extend the tax credits for three years, or else families across the Hudson Valley are going to seriously suffer.”
