7 DAYS: Congressman Mike Lawler is Running Out of Time to Sign the Health Care Discharge Petition and Lower Premium Costs for His Constituents
If Health Care Tax Credits Are Not Extended Ahead of the December 15 Open Enrollment Deadline, Hudson Valley Families Could See Their Insurance Premiums Double!
HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK — With a key Open Enrollment deadline drawing near, Congressman Mike Lawler is running out of time to sign the health care discharge petition and bring the three-year health care tax credit extension up for a vote to lower premium costs for thousands of his constituents in the Hudson Valley. December 15th marks the last day for New Yorkers to enroll in a plan for coverage beginning on January 1st. If the expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits are not extended by then, working families could see their monthly premiums skyrocket, with some households forced to pay more than double what they paid this year for the same plan.
Republican Rep. Glen Grothman just stated in an interview that the three-year extension would pass the House if it came up for a vote—Rep. Lawler has the power to make that happen.
“I honestly can’t believe this is still a conversation that we’re having,” said Zach, a disability services provider from Brewster. “In less than a month, thousands of Hudson Valley residents are set to see their health insurance premiums skyrocket, forcing some off their coverage entirely. There is a plan on the table to extend these tax credits for three years, and the discharge petition only needs four more signatures to force a vote in the House. What on earth is Congressman Lawler waiting for? If he wants us to believe he cares about lowering costs for New Yorkers, he needs to sign the discharge petition and support the three-year extension. Otherwise, he’s once again all talk and no action.”
