Once Again, Congressman Mike Lawler Folds Under Pressure and Votes to Defend Republican Tariffs

HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK — Congressman Mike Lawler has once again folded to pressure from party leadership and joined his Republican colleagues in voting to defend President Trump’s disastrous tariff policy. Despite his best efforts, the measure failed, and Congress is now able to challenge the administration’s tariffs, beginning with a vote later today to repeal tariffs on Canada. While Rep. Lawler claims that lowering costs for New Yorkers is one of his highest priorities, last night’s vote proves once again that his so-called ‘focus on affordability’ is nothing but another empty promise.
“Congressman Lawler wants to convince us that he’s a fighter, willing to stand up and defy his party in order to fight for the people of the Hudson Valley. But he’s shown us time and time again that that’s all just a ruse,” said Melita, a mother of four from North Salem. “Tariffs are causing prices to go up on nearly everything we buy, yet Mike Lawler keeps voting for them. How is that a focus on affordability? I can’t even afford to send my kids to the after-school activities they want to participate in anymore. Rep. Lawler needs to stop folding under the slightest pressure and start actually fighting for the people here in the Hudson Valley. He needs to stop supporting this tax on New Yorkers and demand an immediate end to the failed tariff regime.”
Studies have shown that American consumers are bearing a staggering 96% of the burden of Republicans’ failed economic scheme, with small businesses paying billions in tariffs and passing the vast majority of those costs onto New Yorkers. On average, working- and middle-class families in New York’s 17th Congressional District are now paying nearly $2,000 more each year because of tariff-led price increases. If Congressman Lawler truly cares about lowering costs for New Yorkers, he can start today by voting to overturn Trump’s harmful tariffs on Canadian goods.
