Congressman Mike Lawler Wants You to Think He’s Focused On Lowering Costs For Working New Yorkers—He’s Not

Rep. Lawler Voted to Cut Funding for Health Care and Food Assistance in Order to Pay for Tax Breaks for the Ultra-Rich

HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK —
In a recent interview with Newsmax, Congressman Mike Lawler attempted to sell his record as one focused on tackling the affordability crisis and lowering costs for working New Yorkers. Alongside laughable b-roll of $100 bills being printed and stock images of blue-collar workers, Rep. Lawler touted his vote for the Republican Tax Law as ‘the largest tax cut in American history.’ While he isn’t wrong, he’s being intentionally misleading about who those tax cuts actually benefit.

“Congressman Lawler is being incredibly sneaky with his words, trying to make us think that the Republican Tax Law was some gift to working-class New Yorkers, when it was actually a massive betrayal,” said Rochelle, a Medicaid recipient from Peekskill. “It was the largest tax cut in American history—it just didn’t go to you or me. The Republican Tax Law massively cut taxes for the richest Americans by cutting more than $1 trillion in health care and food assistance that working families rely on. Rep. Lawler is raising our costs while giving handouts to the wealthy, and now he thinks he can trick us and get a pat on the back? Give me a break.”

While Congressman Lawler would like us to believe that the Republican Tax Law was focused on helping working-class families, the majority of the benefits are actually directed towards large corporations and the ultra-rich. Of the $4.5 trillion in tax cuts over the next ten years, $1 trillion will go directly to the top 1% of Americans. To pay for this, the same legislation cut more than $1.1 trillion in funding from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid, and state health programs, raising costs for thousands of his constituents. As if that wasn’t enough, working families are also getting taxed with nearly $1,200 in tariffs, which Rep. Lawler voted to support.
